Ferris Wheel and Carousel in "Midway"

Ferris Wheel and Carousel in "Midway"

Cathy McClure's Ferris Wheel and Carousel in "Midway" on view at the Moss Bureau, May 2012

Midway is a tour-de-force 'circus' performance created by multi-media artist / metalsmith Cathy McClure, comprised of two monumental zoetropic installations, "The Wheel" and "Spinning Jenny". These illusional carnival rides, constructed of copper, bronze, sterling silver, aluminum, steel, and fabric, are populated with her bronze and silver 'bots'. Music, flashing strobe lights, and whirring motors create the illusion - magnified by strong shadows thrown against the walls - of additional frenzied madcap motion. Spinning Jenny incorporates romping elephants and galloping horses racing to an enchanted and mesmerizing musical fantasy.

Zoetrope: a device for giving an illusion of motion, consisting of a slitted drum that, when whirled, shows a succession of images placed opposite the slits within the drum as one moving image.

"As a multi-media artist with a strong background in metal design, I am seduced by the limitless potential of sterling silver, bronze, and steel. My enthusiasm for the techniques and traditions of metalwork is rivaled only by a wild preoccupation with mechanical toys and the discrepancy between the public's perception of an imagined techno-future and that future that we now inhabit." - Cathy McClure

Menagerie

"You'll never look at those cute little mechanical stuffed bunnies the same way again. On Thursday, Moss unveils Remains, an exhibition by the artist Cathy McClure, whose particular passion is taking these mass-produced, eminently disposable items and redesigning them as precious objects. McClure strips away the plush motorized creatures furry coats and fluffy stuffing and then casts the animals plastic bodies and limbs in bronze, while leaving most of their mechanisms intact but exposed. A rabbits ears, for instance, are reduced to their antenna-like spring supports, while a formerly cocky rooster drags his now-heavy body around, crowing as if he were still king of the barnyard. If the movie Mad Max had had a toy shop, these half-whimsical, half-disturbing animals would have fit right in. But they're strictly for big kids now, with their sumptuous bronze bodies and five-figure price tags." - PILAR VILADAS, New York Times

Carnival of Life

Midway

"Midway" references the traveling carnivals of Seattle-based artist Cathy McClure's youth -- complete with music, whirling lights, futuristic mechanized toys, a buzzing 10' Ferris wheel and working carousel. On view at Bellevue Arts Museum,, Seattle WA, January, 2012.
